To honor Judge Lloyd D. George, a police-escorted motorcade which will arrive at the front of the federal courthouse at 333 S. Las Vegas Blvd., this Saturday, October 17 just after 9 a.m. The motorcade will stop for 10 minutes for the public to pay respects.
Judge George, a federal judge with over 39 years on the federal bench, passed away on Oct. 7. The District of Nevada United States District Court on Las Vegas Blvd. is named after Judge George who is considered a legal icon in the community for his legal work and efforts as an emissary for justice, the rule of law and legal education.
Lloyd D. George was appointed as a United States District judge for the District of Nevada by President Ronald Reagan on April 18, 1984, to a seat vacated by Roger D. Foley. He served as chief judge from 1992-1997. He assumed senior status on December 1997.
Judge George worked on various committees of the Judicial Conference of the United States. His contributions include lectures and training for international judges, legal officials, scholars and students. He spearheaded the Open World Rule of Law program in the United States; a program that builds mutual understanding between the U.S. and other nations.
Judge George has authored articles on the administration of the federal judiciary, ethics and insolvency. He has won many awards, including the BYU Alumni Distinguished Service Award and the Notre Dame Club’s John C Mowbray Humanitarian of the Year Award. In 2001, at the commencement at BYU, Judge George was the recipient of the BYU Presidential Medallion, and in 2005, he received the Jensen Public Service Award from Boalt Hall, University of California at Berkeley, in recognition of his distinguished career and lifelong dedication to public service.
