The Eighth Judicial District Court of Nevada is accepting employment applications for three court hearing master positions. The application closing date is July 27, 2022 at 5:01 p.m.

There are three positions to be filled. Applicants must indicate for which position they are applying.
1. Probate Commissioner: The Probate Commissioner will be responsible for conducting hearings and rendering legal opinions and decisions in probate matters.
2. Court Hearing Master-Temporary Protective Order (TPO): The TPO Hearing Master will be responsible for conducting hearings and rendering legal opinions and decisions in domestic violence protection order matters.
3. Court Hearing Master-Child Support: The Child Support Hearing Master will be responsible for conducting hearings and rendering legal opinions and decisions in child support matters.
Applicants must be a member of the State Bar of Nevada who is in good standing, and has been so for a minimum of five continuous years. Candidates are required to submit a resume (and it is preferable to include a cover letter).

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Subsequent employment background investigations may also be conducted.
Job description and examples of duties: The probate commissioner serves at the pleasure of the chief judge for the Eighth Judicial District Court, and the duties are enumerated under Part IV of the EDCR. Certain matters and trust proceedings under Title 12 and Title 13 are automatically transferred to the probate commissioner, and district court judges may also refer matters to the commissioner. The probate commissioner reviews filings, receives evidence, conducts hearings, and makes findings of fact, conclusions of law and recommendations. The probate commissioner is responsible for managing the regular Friday probate calendar, as well as preparing a list of probate matters scheduled for hearing or those that are approved and do not require hearing. The probate commissioner oversees the staff at the probate department, which includes training and supervising staff in reviewing filings, communicating with self-represented parties, and organizing matters for review.
The court hearing masters for both TPO and Child Support serve at the pleasure of the chief judge for the Eighth Judicial District Court and the presiding judge of Family Division pursuant to EDCR 5.208. TPO hearing masters are included in NRS 33.019, and child support hearing masters duties are enumerated in NRS 3.405. The hearing masters manage their calendars and caseloads by hearing oral arguments, reviewing written filings, and considering evidence. The hearing masters make findings of fact, conclusions of law and recommendations. In ensuring court efficiency, the hearing masters serve as a liaison to the judges with procedural recommendations so that parties are receiving quality access. The hearing masters are expected to research statutes, rules, and case law in order to maintain expertise in their relevant areas so that their recommendations are well-presented. The hearing masters also oversee staff and contribute to their selection and training.
Physical Demands: Mobility to work in a typical office or court setting and use standard office equipment, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Accommodation may be made for some of these physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodation.
