Sean M. Tanko has been named as the probate commissioner for the Eighth Judicial District Court of Nevada. He is expected to join the court by June. He replaces former Probate Commissioner Wesley Yamishita who retired in November 2021.
Commissioner Tanko’s has more than 19 years of probate experience that includes work as a sole proprietor of a law-firm. His areas of practice include probate, estate planning, trust administration and guardianship. He served as a pro tem probate commissioner for the district court for more than nine years. Sean Tanko received a Juris Doctorate degree from Creighton University Law School in Omaha, NE and his undergraduate degree from Creighton University.
“We are happy to welcome Commissioner Tanko in his new post as the probate commissioner,” said District Court Chief Judge Linda Marie Bell. “We expect he will bring experience and energy to the court at a time when everyone is working extremely hard to address the backlog created by the pandemic.”
“After a long tenure with the District Court, retired Probate Commissioner Wesley Yamashita left big shoes to fill. Following a careful search, we’ve hired Commissioner Tanko, who brings the experience and track record necessary to meet the demands of the steady increase of complex cases in probate,” said Judge Gloria Sturman, one of three judges who presides over the more than 10,000 probate cases in District Court. “We’re very grateful to Senior Judge Nancy Becker and the probate staff for their outstanding work managing this caseload, while we searched for the right candidate to serve as probate commissioner.”
The probate commissioner is charged with hearing court matters pursuant to Nevada Revised Statutes, making findings of fact and conclusions of law. The commissioner also procures the attendance of witnesses by issuance of subpoenas, requires the production of evidence, takes evidence and rules upon its admissibility. The post also includes other responsibilities that contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of service to those in probate cases.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to use my many years of experience practicing probate law and serving as a pro tem commissioner for Eighth Judicial District Court,” said Commissioner Tanko. “I look forward to joining the exceptional team working on probate and proving the highest level of service to those who access our court at what is often an extremely difficult time in their life.”
