The legal community mourns the loss of The Honorable Susan W. Scann. Judge Scann who passed away Saturday. Judge Scann was known for service to the community and for an impressive 40-year legal career including service as jurist in department 29 of the Eighth Judicial District Court since 2011 and as an alternate Municipal Court judge for the city of Las Vegas from 1980 to 2010.
She practiced civil law for 34 years before taking the District Court bench. Judge Scann has many outstanding accomplishments including: service as a member of the Clark County Fee Dispute Committee, president of Southern Nevada Association Women Attorneys, service on the State Bar Ethics Committee and on the Clark County Bar CLE Committee. She is a founding member of the Clark County Bar Pro Bono Committee and a member of Rotary International.
“Our condolences go to the Scann family. Judge Scann leaves a legacy of a dedicated jurist who always maintained high standards and a positive demeanor. She gave generously of her time to get legal representation for those who could not afford it, she served to help others through Rotary International and worked to promote ethics and professionalism through the Clark County Bar Association,” said District Court Chief Judge David Barker. “Her presence on the District Court Bench will be greatly missed.”
Judge Scann received the 1995 Professionalism Award from the Clark County Bar Association. She also recently received an award for outstanding service in law and politics from the Clark County Democratic Lawyers Caucus. Judge Scann was the premier recipient of the award that was named in her honor. The Susan Scann award is to be given annually to a lawyer or judge who has exemplified dedication, commitment and ethics in their conduct.
Judge Scann received a B.A. Degree from the University of Washington in 1968 and her Juris Doctor from the California Western School of Law in 1976. She was a staff member of the California Western Law Review from 1974-1975 and a member of the Board of Editors from 1975-1976.
There will be a rosary prayer service on Friday, July 22 at 6 p.m. at Palm Mortuary on 7600 S. Eastern. The funeral service will be held Saturday, July 23 at 1:15 p.m. at St. Francis de Sales Church at 1111 Michael Way. A court memorial service will be held in the Jury Services room on the third floor of the Regional Justice Center on July 28 at 3:30 p.m. The family requests that those who wish to offer a gesture of condolence, donate either to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church or The American Cancer Society in honor of the beloved Judge Susan Scann in lieu of flowers.
